Bulalo Recipe

Aside from the bulalo steak that I love so so much, the bulalo stew is my number 2 favorite when it comes to beef recipes. The taste of the beef meat and the beef marrow plus the corn, wow!, crazy delicious! You’ll sure end up sweating when you finish that bowl. :)

So I bought a kilo of beef shank, budgeted for two dinners during the week. Actually we are only three in our household, me and my husband plus my big baby boy. Half a kilo of meat is more than enough for us. I planned on cooking bulalo and a version of beef stew using this, but I’ll only boil all of the meat once so I can save on lpg since it would take 2 long hours for the meat to soften. You may do this also so it wouldn’t take so much time the moment you cook the other batch for another beef stew recipe. Just store the other half of the stew in an airtight container in the freezer. When you’re ready to cook the beef stew, boil it for a couple of minutes, add vegetables and seasonings.

Anyways, going back to the bulalo dish, I have seen some with and without potatoes, with and without corn. I even saw some with bananas. There are various versions of bulalo recipe out there but i’ll use this site‘s version, using only one type of cabbage and without potato.

1. Thaw beef. You may notice there are black specks in the beef because I usually put salt and pepper to the meat before i put them in the fridge.

2. Crush the garlic. Slice the onion.

3. Boil water. Add in the beef shanks, garlic, onion and peppercorns. Boil again for 2 hours. Add water as necessary.

4. This is half of the beef and the soup. I store in a tight container to be put in the fridge. I will later use this for my beef stew recipe. Or if you prefer, you may save the other beef shank for another bulalo dish later.

5.  I added water in the remaining stew and boil it again.

6. One corn quartered. 3 cabbage leaves sliced.

7. Add in the corn and cook for 10 minutes.

8. Add in the cabbage, onion leeks and salt. Cook for a minute.

By the way, I prefer to add fish sauce in my bulalo but my husband doesn’t like it, so i used salt instead. You may definitely use fish sauce.

9. Serve hot and enjoy!
